History of the Verde Valley Humane Society
The Verde Valley Humane Society was formed in 1982 by a group of dedicated individuals with a desire to help the animals. It wasn’t until March 31, 1986 that groundbreaking for the current shelter took place, after much delay and turmoil. The grand opening was on August 2, 1986. In the 23 years since, the shelter has gone through some minor modifications, including the outdoor kennel areas. The community has grown tremendously, but the shelter has not. The building is really showing its age, with almost weekly repairs to some piece or part being needed.
Several years ago, a wonderful couple visited our shelter and decided that we needed help. They pledged to donate $500,000 towards a new shelter, provided that we raise the remainder. We’ve been at it for years, and in that time we raised money and also watched the cost of building go up. After much discussion it was decided to move ahead, but to build the new shelter in two phases to make it more affordable. We broke ground for the new building on March 20, 2009. We moved in to our new facility in March of 2010.
If you have donated in the past, consider donating again. If you haven’t done so yet, it’s not too late. There are opportunities to have a meeting room, kennel, cat cage or bench named for yourself or a loved one. We will sell engraved bricks to be placed at the entrance. Or you may remain anonymous, like the $500,000+ benefactor who only wants to help the animals, and receive no recognition. The choice is yours, but for the animal’s sake, please do something.
Thank you all for your support!
